"The indifference of the majority of our people towards our local history will inevitably be replaced in time by the deep and wide-spread interest to which its rich and varied character entitles it. In the meantime, however, material of the highest historic value is being lost, and it should be a pleasant duty for us to preserve such parts of it as may add to the glory of our people, or the knowledge of our race." — Dr. W. F. Ganong.Connell House, pictured above, originally the residence of the Hon. Charles Connell, is the permanent home of the Carleton County Historical Society.
Founded in 1960 by a small group of dedicated individuals, the Society's original objective was to acquire the old Carleton County Court House, long used as a stable, and accurately restore the building to its original condition; to research and document local history; to acquire and preserve historical documents and artefacts relating to the County, and by example and education, inspire others to emulate them.
